Cascade Energy is seeking an experienced Strategic Energy Management (SEM) Coach to join our growing Mountain West Territory team. As an SEM Coach this person is responsible for supporting the Energy Information System (EIS) Program with Xcel Energy and identifying new opportunities to grow our work with our existing client. This includes:

  • Strong customer outreach efforts to recruit new industrial customers into the existing EIS Program.
  • Working directly with the Xcel Energy Program Manager and Account Managers to assess industrial customersí strategic commitment, energy savings opportunities, and overall fit for the EIS program.
  • Implementing the EIS program for existing and new industrial customers.
  • Working with the Mountain West Territory and Customer Engagement teams to provide a strong client outreach effort to identify additional ways Cascade can serve Xcel Energy and its customers outside of the existing EIS Program.

In addition to working as the SEM Coach, this person will serve as the office lead for a newly formed office in Xcel Energy Territory.  This will involve close coordination with other Cascade offices to manage workloads.  

This position requires a specific skillset to be effective Ė a combination of communicative personality, analytical ability, willingness to handle administrative details, and an innate desire to be of service.  We are seeking someone who:

  • has the ability to listen, motivate, and influence;
  • understands the roles, motivations, and needs of customers and successfully translates this information into short and long-term business strategies and initiatives;
  • utilizes an engaging speaking style and is able to adapt communication to various audiences (operations to executive staff).

This is a full time, exempt position which reports to the Xcel Energy Program Manager. This is a remote role (work from home, or we will secure a work space), and there is some flexibility for the location of this role, as customers for this program are located in both the Minneapolis, MN area and the Denver, CO area; as such, we are open to either location. Regardless of office location, this role will serve customers in both locations, which will require approximately 25% travel. Travel could be a half-day trip to a site, a full day trip to multiple sites, or an occasional overnight trip to serve customers in more distant locations. Please note that training will happen at our Pleasant Grove, UT office, requiring frequent travel to Utah for the first few months.



The SEM Coach will guide program participants through all phases of the EIS program, including recruiting, setup, implementation, and verification. Recruiting is a critical step in which this individual will engage with Xcel Energy Program staff to identify industrial customers who may be a good fit for the EIS program. This will entail outreach and building relationships with Xcel Energy Account Managers and other key Xcel Staff such as Program Managers, Energy Engineers, and Field Sales Engineers. Once a customer has been identified as a possible candidate, this individual will engage with the customer, often in partnership with Xcel Energy staff, to present the EIS Program and its benefits and to assess the customerís readiness for the program. 

Once customers are enrolled in the program, the SEM Coach will work with them at their industrial locations to fully understand their equipment, operations, existing energy management practices, and facility energy drivers. They will assist customers with implementation of a Strategic Energy Management program and Energy Information System at their facilities.  They will coach customers on implementation of SEM best practices and identification of an EIS that will best fit their needs. They will serve as the customerís advocate in conversations with their EIS provider to install and configure an EIS tool to meet both industry standard practices and the customerís energy management needs. This individual will manage the various tasks of each phase of the EIS Program, including:

  • Facilitating on-site Energy Management Assessments (EMA)
  • Working with Cascade technical staff to create Energy Models and document Measurement and Verification (M&V) Plans
  • Developing Metering and EIS Plans
  • Overseeing EIS Installation, Integration, and Commissioning
  • Coaching the site on SEM Practices via phone, email, or in person, at least once per month  
  • Facilitating Energy Scans and providing implementation support for identified energy projects
  • Documenting program success and energy savings achieved in a completion report

The SEM Coach will partner closely with our customers as they navigate through the program, assisting them to overcome barriers and achieve optimal program success.



For this role, we seek candidates with a track record of superior performance, including:

  • Strong communication skills, including excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills (English)
  • Strong customer engagement, recruitment, and customer service skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and database reporting
  • Familiarity with the statistical methods used for developing energy models for industrial facilities
  • Experience in using energy data and/or EIS to drive energy savings and motivate end users to take action 
  • Previous experience with organizational change management consulting and/or energy efficiency engineering
    • Ability to effectively communicate and develop work relationships at all levels within an organization, including the ability to effectively interact with highly technical people
    • Understanding of, and relationships with, industrial and utility customers
    • Knowledge of, and experience in, a technical customer support organization with a focus on data driven programs
    • Ability to manage deadlines and deliverables effectively in an environment of changing business requirements
    • Highly proficient at reviewing and interpreting data and conducting statistical analysis
    • Proactive, resourceful, and highly motivated; good communication skills with the ability to achieve results



This role requires a Bachelorís degree or higher with preference for engineering, business, or other applicable degree. Additionally, strong engineering analysis skills, using MS Excel, are required.

Candidates with a background in industrial energy efficiency and strategic energy management delivery are strongly preferred.

Additional, highly desirable experience includes:

  • A general knowledge of manufacturing processes and facility systems, including the energy aspects of common mechanical systems
  • Continuous improvement programs such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or ISO 50001
  • Project management, management coaching, and consulting roles
